Three islands of the Cyclades quietly whisper their secrets!

A sea studded with islands, a sky always azure, a monochrome of sublime blue, villages dazzling of whiteness and simplicity … such are the Cyclades, the archipelago of 147 islands and islets touched by the grace most of the year, surrounded by piercing sunlight.

With our colleague from Cyclades, we organize tours of 10 days on the islands of Syros, Tinos and Mykonos.

Our intention is for the travelers to immerse themselves in a culture nourished by ancient and contemporary references:

• Nice and comfortable accommodation

• Local fine dining restaurants

• Visits / guided discoveries addressed to a range of customers attracted by a more reserved tourism.

• Archaeological sites to discover.

• Hiking and discovering unknown routes

• Gastronomy and local crafts to discover. The Cycladic cuisine is a festival of flavors; the offerings of the land, the sea and the delights of the Cycladic culinary art combine poetry, made of bare rocks, small fishing ports, abrupt cliffs where the matt whiteness of limestone opposes the sparkling marble and tawny colors of volcanic rocks.

Three destinations: Syros-Tinos-Mykonos

Surrounded by the Cycladic Blue, the island of Syros, a precious Aegean pearl, has been the capital of the Cyclades since 1835.

Ermoúpolis (pictured above), the capital of the island, is a beautiful neoclassical city, standing on a naturally amphitheater-shaped site. The city is very different from the traditional Cycladic architecture, a very charming city, but above all, less intensely touristy than the other islands, with a local life that does not depend on tourism.

Its impressive central square Miaoulis, its small alleys filled with taverns, its carefree waterfront studded with trendy cafes, its neoclassical buildings, its old buildings, its white houses cascading to the port and its lifestyle remain unforgatable.

Ano Syros, the small Catholic city on the hill overlooks the port of Ermoúpolis. The stone walls, the narrow streets, the sheltered passages, the vaults, give it a medieval character and the charm of a past age. At the top of the city is the Catholic Cathedral of St. George, lower down the Jesuits and Capuchins Monasteries and in the center of the town we can visit the museum dedicated to the popular composer Markos Vamvakaris.

The land is arid and razed by the meltemi of August and the winds of the north of winter but, pampered by the care of the locals, is generous.

It is in this charming island that we will make an original cultural and gastronomic journey where the products of the soil and those of the human spirit will be in the spotlight.

A stopover to realize towards the past and the present ..

At 80,000 nautical miles from Athens, Tinos is an island of the Cyclades archipelago still preserved from the great international tourism, one of the best kept secrets of the Cyclades.

In many villages life is active, intense with traditional colors and fantastic beaches. These villages are jewels adorned with the marble of the country, its inhabitants have kept an astonishing authenticity, and the island is full of summer-houses belonging to artists who come to find privacy and inspiration.

Tinos is for the Greeks a holy island, because of the discovery, in 1823, in full war of independence, of an icon of the Virgin (Panagia).

From a village in the interior to a port, a blonde beach or an isolated monastery, we will follow the secular route of sheltered wind routes by stone walls. Itinerary punctuated by mills, towers (dovecotes or places of watch and defense) crowned erected above the coast

Tiniote cuisine is a festival of flavors. Surely we will not miss the Louza (Λούζα): Salted pork fillet and dried with pepper and fennel, we will have to decode the manufacture mysteries of the local cheese Kefalaki made of sheep’s raw milk, in an old typical farm of the tiniote countryside. We will visit among others a local wine producer who will introduce us to the secrets of the Tiniote vineyard.

This island with a thousand dovecotes has many happy surprises …

Mykonos with its beautiful beaches is renowned for its cosmopolitan character and its important nightlife. The island owes its beauty to an extraordinary combination of white houses, narrow streets, churches, windmills, blue skies, intense sunshine and crystal clear waters.

Mykonos is not only a place to have fun all the time, it’s also a welcoming island, where past and present mingle, where traditional Greek cuisine is tasted and the least photo will remind you of an exceptional vacation. Above all, it is the place where you will leave a little of your heart and that will make you want to return again and again …

Mykonos is the favorite island of celebrities, with a particular brilliance that enchants all visitors.

So why not you ?

The program of the discovery

Arrival to Athens. Airport reception. Accommodation in an hotel in Piraeus or Athens

Early in the morning – taxi to Piraeus and boarding for Syros for a sailing of 4:00 hours. Accommodation at the hotel.

In the afternoon visit of the Upper Town (Ano Syros) medieval agglomeration, the first part of the island inhabited with the Cathedral of St. Georges and the Monasteries of the Jesuits and Capuchins.

Stop in one of these small taverns to discover the famous gastronomy of Ano Syros.

The land of Syros is arid and razed by the meltemes of August and the winds of the north of winter but you can meet a wide variety of plants and herbs.

A local restaurateur from Ano Syros will invite us to an original gastronomic journey where local products will be in the spotlight.

His pots will be held in the small kitchen of a small restaurant. The greedy and generous local cuisine, full of sun and heat, will be represented by dishes such as jack mackerel with capers, wild fennel dumplings, homemade puff pastry stuffed with fresh local cheese, aubergines au gratin with Saint-Michalis local cheese, summer vegetables sauteed with olive oil, beans with aioli. Access by taxi or bus and the rest of the visit on foot. About 2 hours of walking.

In the morning visit the historic center of the city (walking access).

The beautiful Place Miaoulis, named after the admiral hero of Greek independence whose statue sits in front of the white marble paved esplanade on which the pigeons and children run, and the imposing City Hall, the largest in Greece, at the top of its flight of steps.

The square is surrounded by beautiful buildings, elegant balconies, arcades to host the tables of bistros, etc. The center of Ermoupolis was designed by European architects, and the city is both intensely Greek and surprisingly cosmopolitan, like the “Apollo” theater, which is a smaller scale reproduction of … .the Scala of Milan!

To the right side of the town hall, you can see the imposing building of the library, whose smell of old paper passes the double door. And finally, the visit of the impressive Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas and the private palaces of the aristocratic district of Vaporia and Apollo Street. About 3 hours of walk – free evening

Visit to a factory producing Turkish delight, then the Museum of Industry and the countryside of the island (access by bus).

Syros Loukoum is the most famous local product of Syros!

The story of Syrian Loukoum comes to the island from the first refugees of Chios, who brought their knowledge with them.

The first official stamp of a Loukoum producer (Stamatelakis) appeared in 1837. Syros was full of Loukoum production until 1960 and each of these manufactures had its own product.

The recipe has only three essential ingredients: water, sugar and starch. The producer puts the ingredients in a cauldron that is on fire, where the Turkish delight is stirred constantly until the mix is ready – depending on the producer’s experience. Then, spread the product on a floured sheet for 1 day. Powdered sugar is added and then the Turkish delight is cut into small pieces.

It is said that the water of Syros and the climatic conditions make the Loukoum a unique delight. The visitor will find it with different flavors: mastic, rose, almond, peanut, coconut, bergamot etc. About 4h-free evening

Curiosities well-hidden to discover: On the port an old Turkish house with an inner courtyard, which in the past had in its center a jet of water.

We are given explanations of how the products were made and we can taste several small dishes. The wines are excellent especially the local sweet red wine!

We also propose to visit a typical Mykonos cheese dairy: a company located in the heart of the Mykonos countryside. Several generations of cheesemakers, with identical values and know-how, succeeded each other in making the famous “Kopanisti” of Mykonos: a cheese ripened in the sun, with a very pronounced pungent taste, white in color of spread, made from goat’s, sheep’s, cow’s milk or a mixture of the three as well as “Xinotyra” (type of sour cheese).
